What is Face Wash?
Think your face wash as the "gatekeeper" of your skincare routine. From a medical perspective, its primary function is to remove lipophilic (oil-based) debris like sebum, sunscreen and hydrophilic (water-based) debris like sweat and dust.
Medical Truth: The most expensive serum in the world cannot penetrate a layer of dead skin and oxidized oil. If your cleansing step fails, your entire skincare routine fails. The goal is selective cleansing - Process of removing the dirt without stripping the Stratum Corneum (your protective outer skin layer).
Face Wash vs. Cleanser
Many patients use these terms interchangeably, but in dermatology, formulation matters.
Face Wash and Cleanser differ mainly in texture, intensity and skin type suitability.
-
Face Wash are typically water based formulations that foam or lather. They contain surfactants (cleaning agents) designed to cut through oil and grease.
-
Best for: Oily, Acne Prone, and Combination skin in humid climates (like South Asia).
-
Cleanse are often creamy, milky, or oil based non-foaming formulas. They dissolve dirt rather than washing it away.
-
Best for: Extremely dry, sensitive, or post procedure skin.
Expert opinion: For the humid, pollution heavy environment of India and Nepal, a gentle foaming face wash is usually superior for preventing clogged pores, only if it is sulfate free.
How to Identify Your Skin Type ?
To Know your skin type, perform the “Bare Face” method.
-
Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, Pat dry.
-
Do not apply any toner, moisturizer or serum.
-
Wait 30 minutes and observe.

Your Skin Type is... |
|
Tight, parched, or looks flaky |
Dry |
|

Combination |
|

|
Itchy, red, or stinging |

Note: In South Asia, many people have "Dehydrated Oily Skin" - where harsh soaps have stripped the moisture, causing the skin to overproduce oil to compensate.
Breakdown of Face Wash Ingredients
Ignoring the front of the bottle. Turn it over and look specifically for these clinically proven ingredients.
-
Salicylic Acid (BHA): The gold standard for pores. Unlike other acids, it is oil soluble, meaning it penetrates inside the pore lining to dissolve clogs. Essential for acne prevention.
-
Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid/Derivatives): An antioxidant that neutralizes free radical damage from pollution and brightens skin tone.
-
Grapefruit Extract (Citrus Grandis): A potent natural source of AHAs and antioxidants. As it provides gentle enzymatic exfoliation without the abrasion of scrubs.
-
Glutathione: Ideally used for hyperpigmentation. It restricts tyrosinase (the enzyme that produces melanin), helping to fade dark spots.
Product Feature: We formulated the True Derma Glow Face Wash specifically with this "Tri-Active" approach: Salicylic Acid to clear unwanted oil, combined with Grapefruit Extract and Glutathione to tackle the pigmentation issues common in Indian skin tones.
How to Wash Your Face Correctly ?
Wash your face two times a day ( morning/ night ). Rinsing skin with lukewarm water is the key. Avoid hot water, harsh scrubbing and bar soaps. Most people spend 10 seconds washing their face. This is clinically insufficient and the correct method is;
-
Wash Your Hands: Never touch your face with dirty hands.
-
Use Lukewarm Water: Hot water vasodilates capillaries (causes redness) and strips lipids. Cold water doesn't effectively dissolve oil.
-
The 60 Second Rule: This is the most important advice I can give. Massage the cleanser into your skin for a full 60 seconds.
-
Why? Because it activates ingredients like Salicylic Acid which needs contact time to break down sebum. 10 seconds is just moving soap around.
-
Target the "Forgotten Zones": Focus on the hairline, the crevices of the nose, and under the jawline.
- Pat (Don't Rub) Dry: Use a clean, soft towel. Rubbing causes micro excoriations (tiny tears) in the skin barrier.
Common Mistakes That Ruin Your Skin Barrier
-
Over Washing: Washing more than twice a day upsets your skin’s natural balance. Instead of staying clean, this actually invites acne causing bacteria to thrive.
-
Harsh Scrubs: Ditch the walnut and apricot scrubs, they often scratch and damage the skin surface. Chemical exfoliation (like the Salicylic Acid in True Derma Glow) clears pores safely without the physical damage.
-
Forgetting the Neck: Your skincare routine shouldn't stop at your jawline. The neck has thinner skin and ages faster, so always bring your products down to your chest!
- Chasing "Squeaky Clean": If your face feels tight after washing, you’ve stripped away its natural protection. Healthy skin should feel soft and hydrated, never tight or squeaky.

Expert Advice: Consistency is better than intensity. A gentle, active packed face wash used correctly twice a day will yield better results than an expensive facial once a month.
